Server-Side vs. Client-Side Games: Why Fair Play Protects Your Business Margins

If your prize wheel outcome is determined in JavaScript, tech-savvy users can game it. Here is why true cryptographic backend validation is critical for merchants.

When running a promotional contest, businesses often set high-value grand prizes—such as a $100 dining credit, free annual memberships, or premium merchandise. While these prizes create enormous excitement, they also attract exploitation if the underlying software is poorly designed.

Many off-the-shelf WordPress plugins and basic JavaScript widgets determine the winning segment right inside the visitor's web browser. Anyone opening Chrome DevTools or modifying local variables can force the wheel to stop on the grand prize 100% of the time, quickly exhausting merchant inventories.

How Happy Taps Enforces Server-Side Authority

At Happy Taps, the browser is strictly an animation display layer. When a player taps the 'SPIN' hub, an authenticated POST request is transmitted to our backend API. The server runs an atomic database transaction that evaluates the campaign's active schedule, remaining prize inventory, and per-device rate limits. Only after the cryptographic outcome is finalized and recorded in PostgreSQL does the server respond with the target segment index. The frontend simply plays a physics easing curve that lands on the predetermined result.

Single-Use Cryptographic Coupon Tokens

Every winning play generates a unique, collision-resistant coupon code (e.g. HTP-8F29K) backed by database constraints. When presented to staff at checkout, our redemption portal marks the record as REDEEMED atomically. Screenshots, print duplicates, and reloaded browsers cannot be redeemed a second time.
